While not technically a "job," I wanted to share an LIS-related opportunity that has interested me for a long time. The MV Doulos is an ocean liner that has been transformed into a floating book fair that visits countries around the entire world. While no crewmember gets paid, they do apply for "jobs" and I have often thought that this would be a great service opportunity and resume builder, and definitely unconventional! I searched their website for a current LIS-related job opening and could not find one to post, but since their mission is to bring books to the world, they have many staff members dedicated to running a giant book fair. Here is the website:

During one of our last class times in LIS 6120, we talked about digital libraries. I wanted to include a posting for a digital librarian, but after looking at a couple postings, the job descriptions sounded very similar to regular library positions. Here is one for a Taxonomy Editor that I came across in my search. Interestingly enough, one of the educational requirements is the MLIS degree. Other transferable skills for this position include:
Troubleshooting errors
Extensive research
Categorization methodologies
Writing
Analysis & critical thinking
Detail oriented
Computer skills--Windows, Office

This is an interesting job opportu nity that drew my attention from the listserv. It looks like the future librarians will be more technicians than librarians, with the amount of technology knowledge demanded from them.

I found this online under librarian jobs. I found it to be an interesting posting geared toward those at the end of their career in librarianship (which is a long way away for us, but I still thought it was interesting).

Independent Sales Rep, MOTOR,

Named a "Cool Tool" by Library Journal, we have been providing media information to collection development and reference professionals for nearly 12 years.

We have 2 openings for independent sales representatives. This is a commission position that also offers a generous bonus for expanding our paid subscriber base.

You will be contacting buying consortiums, state library associations, regional library groups and related professional organizations. You will be working from home (everyone in our organization does). This is a great opportunity for a retired librarian or stay at home library professional.

Our subscription service is very easy to explain. We've got thousands of references (both libraries and booksellers). Please visit our website motor-online.com BEFORE you apply.

We don't want a traditional resume, just an email outlining your experience and how this will help you sell our service.

Apply to Daria Skeete, nypilotprogram@aol.com

Although I do not have a job posting, I think the job descriptions posted are reflective of a technological society where we want things done quickly and want things now. It makes since that librarians become as technical as possible, so we can meet the needs of our patrons who get a lot of information from wikipedia. Also it makes sense for employers to have tech saavy people, as they want the best information to stay competitive.
